Mentor Teacher Expectations
  • Set aside time weekly to plan and reflect with your resident
  • Engage in monthly reflective "Coaching Conversations" using the Essentials for Teaching Rubric to track resident's progress and set goals. Residents will self-score prior to the conversations.
  • Respond to Friday morning "check-in" emails. There will be a Google form attached that should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
  • Attend MT training throughout the school year (dates linked above).  If you are sharing a resident, you can split up the training days.
  • Support your resident through the use of Co-teaching strategies and Coaching Protocols (linked below)
  • Provide appropriate support for your resident's TPA preparation:
    • Help them gather video permission, help record their lessons; give feedback on their lesson design and delivery

Helpful Resources and Descriptions

The Essentials Rubric is what will be used to guide your "Coaching Conversations." Each month there are three rubrics you will look over with your resident. It is the resident's responsibility to ensure that time is scheduled to complete this task.

The Teacher Performance Expectations are the standards for preliminary credential candidates.

Our Gradual Release Timeline provides guidance for the types of activities residents should be exposed to during the year. This timeline is flexible! Some residents will be ready to take on additional responsibilities quickly and others may need more support.

This observation template could be used when residents have opportunities to observe other teachers at your site.

This is the lesson planning template that residents will use when they are completing formal observations. You are not at all required to use this template for your own lessons.

These two resources provide different strategies for co-teaching and for coaching. We will continue to review coaching and co-teaching strategies at future mentor teacher trainings.

This is the form that is used to document residents' clinical practice time. Residents keep track of their days. Substituting for mentors and attending professional development with the district can count toward clinical practice days.

This link opens a folder to three different video permission forms. If your school site has students complete video release forms as part of back to school registration, the only form required is the admin approval form. Please help residents get proper permission to video their lessons.
